The tradition in biographical writing is different between Western and
China. In Westen, the biographical writing emphasizes the description of human
characteristics. As a result, many masterpieces provide plenty of valuable
forsthand material. Although the source of biographical writing in china can be
traced back earlier than western, its style is different. Frome Pan Ku's "The
History of Han" many biographical writers pay less attention on portraying
characteristics than listing historical data. The longer biographies had not be
written until recent days.
This article, based upon Chung I-Jen's "The Sixty Years of My Grievous Life" and
Ku Shiu-Yun's "The Storm in Taichung", is talking about the importance and value
of biographies in researching of Taiwanese history after postwar period. These
biographies hold lots of reference which is worthy of consideration. |
