The aim of this research was to establish a community-based and continuous environmental auditing model. It was to evaluate the negative impact brought by tourists, local residents, and the ecotourism industry. The model was tested in a selected ecotourism site-Tao-Mi village in Nan-To County. The results of the implementation of audits in Tao-Mi village provided implications for modifying the model as well as developing strategies for community-based environmental auditing. The research findings indicated a number of important steps that should be included in an environmental auditing plan: selecting environmental indicators by stakeholders, transforming the selected indicators into practical auditing works that can be implemented by local residents, and implementing audits before and during tourism season. The proposed steps for the implementation of environmental auditing were carried out by a number of volunteers in Tao-Mi village. The results of the audits suggest a number of strategies, including cooperation between local residents and academic institutions or NGOs; establishment of local interpreter training, and enhancement of stakeholder collaboration. |
