Ukraine, a historical borderland country between Russia and other European countries, has been widely influenced by its neighbors in terms of politics, economy, culture, and ethnic composition. The main purpose of this essay is to do descriptive analysis on Ukraine's ethnic issues as well as to explain its recent unrest through the perspective of ethnic politics. The primary findings include: (1) There are over 130 ethnic groups in Ukraine, while the rivalry between Ukrainians (77.8%) and ethnic Russians (17.3%) is the hotspot. (2) The rivalry and competition between the two major ethnic groups are primarily triggered by the differences of imagined national identity, perceived nationalism, preferred foreign relations, and attitudes towards the status of Russian language. (3) The ethnic relations between the two major groups are getting worse and have no sign for improvement in the foreseeable future.
