The Chinese Community is one of the most important groups in Macau since its inception 400 years ago.
With the constant immigration of Chinese merchants during the late Ming Dynasty, the Chinese community in Macau
began to grow gradually and became most diverse, particularly in terms of the occupational differentiation including
interpreters, traders, craftsmen, shipmen, servants, soldiers and farmers. Social differentiation goes with social integration.
The organizational process of the Chinese community in Macau started to develop since then. Although the clan in
a real sense and the chamber of commerce had not been established during the Ming Dynasty, the places of worship
centered around folk beliefs acted as a substitute. This kind of ritual behavior is a reflection of regional awareness and
social alliance in some sense |
