Numerous articles have pointed out that gentries in the Qing Dynasty had a limited knowledge of Taiwan and their writings were full of imagination or misconceptions. Some studies further stated that gentries in the late Qing Dynasty still adopted old ways to keep records without direct observations by themselves. This research, through descriptions of Natural History in Taiwan, aims to explore if the gazetteers of gentries were influenced by "Allopatry Taiwanese writing" in the early Qing Dynasty and contained imagination. With the development of Taiwanese society, it was evident that some differences existed in the gazetteers of the gentries in the mid-late Qing Dynasty, which discussed some inaccurate records in the past. The effect of the editing of a gazetteer was clearly identified. After having some understanding of Taiwan, the gentries in the Qing Dynasty have started field work. The editors of the gazetteers have employed the same method to keep authentic records of the society and also revise false documents. |
